This little earpiece isn’t in the finished film, and I can’t figure out if a) it’s an actual wireless earbud so he can hear direction, which makes sense for the stunts but not for the scene at the salt flats, or b) they CG’d it away after deciding it was too hard to explain that Max stuck a broken earbud in his ear because he was just so tired of Furiosa firing guns directly to the right of his head.

It is in the finished film, and it’s not an earpiece. It’s a rolled up wad of cloth stuck in his ear, probably to stop up any bleeding caused by Furiosa using him as a gun stand. 

I mean, I agree that that’s probably the purpose, but it’s… not in the finished film at all.

According to some people who saw an earlier version of the film, Max wears it as a comfort thing. Tom Hardy also mentions it at least once in an interview:

Then I imagined, if this is post-apocalyptic now, what kind of policeman or police officer would he be? I had him more coming from private risk management companies or from that territory — the military, special forces. So that’s why you’ve got the rig on top of the classic silhouette, and ear piece for his team. So yes police, but in a different world police kind of territory.
